Monthly Meetings

NNMHA holds monthly meetings featuring program speakers and Association news.  The public is always invited to attend these meetings free of any charge.  It is typically the last Wednesday of the month, often at a restaurant where we may share a meal, though exceptions are made for holidays or occasions when we may benefit from arena demonstrations in lieu of a dinner program.
For questions about meetings, please contact Joyce Davis 505-490-5390 (text or call) or email at:

The Caja Del Rio: A Vision of the Future
Wednesday January 25

7 pm; dinner at 6 pm
Pecos Trail Cafe  2239 Old Pecos Trail, Santa Fe

The Caja is very important to northern New Mexico. More and more people are using the Caja for riding, running, biking and horse back riding. It is a place in which riders have forged a collaborative partnership with traditional cattle grazers and have succeeded in bringing projects and funding that have improved the area for all.  But what is happening and where are we going?

First, Santa Fe County and the City of Santa Fe have passed resolutions calling for  for Federal recognition of the Caja, which would consolidate management under one Federal agency and possibly designate the Caja as a National Monument. But what does that mean? What happens then?

Find out about one vision for the Caja and the work we could do before any Federal actions are taken. The Caja needs to remain a muti-use area that welcomes all.

About our speaker: Deidre is a well-respected trails advocate who has been recognized for her role in working with governmental agencies and others to influence public policy related to trail planning, protection, development and maintenance.

Among Deidre’s major accomplishments is the mapping of the Caja del Rio Plateau. Her map and user guide is called Caja del Rio Plateau: Riding, Hiking and Biking Trails. Now retired, she was a research and development engineer at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Refuge: A Horsemanship Workshop
SPRING 2023
Nizhoni Ranch, Cerrillos, NM

Working together to develop this new clinic model, four accomplished clinicians will cover a variety of topics, such as release and movement bodywork, tools for rider greater confidence, managing your horse’s asymmetric movement patterns and understanding the role of the nervous system in horses.

Each participant will work with each trainer in either a morning or an afternoon session. Auditors attend at no charge, may observe any group and will be included in some form of participation.

The four trainers are Ginger Gaffney and Leela Brightenburg, Legacy Horse Training; Lynn Clifford (NNMHA member), Equestrian Education; and, Erin Swinney, Pas de Cheval Horse Rescue.

The workshop is limited to 16 participants, so riders can receive more personal attention from several trainers throughout the day.  The registration deadline is September 15. Members have first options to sign up for this clinic until September 9.

For more information, contact Ginger, 505 690-1230, ggaffney@newmexico.com; Leela, 541 944-5216, lbrightenburg@gmail.com; Lynn, 505 231-5353, lynn@lynnclifford.com; or, Erin, 505 316-0311, erinswinney@gmail.com.
