Northern New Mexico Horsemen’s Association
Scholarships, Grants and Sponsorships (“Giving”) Program
In keeping with our mission to encourage and educate our members and the broader northern New Mexico community with regard to equine wellness and equestrian activities, NNMHA funds scholarships, grants and sponsorships to promote equine well-being and support a variety of equestrian interests.
Financial Help for a Variety of Equine Activities
Our goal is to support those who may need financial help, based on merit, to participate in equine-related activities, including (but not limited to) clinics, horse shows, riding lessons, equine-based education and other opportunities that allow for meaningful interaction regarding equine appreciation, care and well-being. We are also interested in funding collaborative programs and in matching funds to leverage shared resources.
We are willing to support individuals, businesses, other charitable or nonprofit organizations and Indian tribal governments who share our interests. We do not contribute to political parties, religious organizations and multi-year endowment or capital campaigns, among others.
Expectations of all applicants are that they will fully participate in an activity, program or curriculum and will follow all rules of the providing individuals or organizations. Applicants will be asked to complete a brief review of their experiences.
Scholarship and grant applicants will submit in writing a summary that details the experience, learning or new skills gained within 45 days of completion. In the case of sponsorships, a written summary will be based on the experience, learning and outcome of participants, as determined by feedback to the sponsor by the participants.

How to Apply for Funding
Scholarships, grants and sponsorships are approved by the NNMHA Board of Directors on a first-come/first-serve basis, with an annual limit of $2,000 per applicant. The Board member who has responsibility for this program makes recommendations to the Board, and a majority vote of Board members determines whether an application receives financial support.
To apply, applicants must complete and submit an appropriate application form and a general liability waiver at least 30 days prior to needing funds, although exceptions to this deadline may be made in the case of certain time frames. Specific application forms are available for grants, sponsorships and scholarships.
All approved funds are paid directly to the provider, not the applicant. Submission does not guarantee approval, and previous funding does not guarantee future funding. However, funding may be recurring with required documentation.

1. Scholarships
Scholarships are given to individuals who may need financial help, based on merit, and have an academic component. Scholarships are horse -related and available for college, vocational-technical schools, veterinarian, veterinary technician or agricultural schools or other recognized educational institution or other programs that involve equine well-being.
Scholarships are generally to be used for study at an educational institution that normally maintains a regular faculty and curriculum and has a body of students in attendance. Scholarships may be used for tuition, fees, books and related supplies and equipment.

A special scholarship, the Eldon and Karen Reyer Youth Scholarship, is available to those under 22 years of age who meet other criteria. More information: Reyer Youth Scholarship
2. Grants
Grants may be given to organizations or individuals who may need financial assistance based on merit. Grants are related to specific projects and activities that foster knowledge and understanding of equines, and do not usually have an academic or career-oriented educational focus.
Grants may be wide-ranging from (but not limited to) support for individuals for clinics, riding, participation in rides, lessons, equipment needs, from start-up programs to operating funds for organizations, research grants typically found in academia or research-oriented nonprofits or in-kind services such as personnel.

3. Sponsorships
Sponsorships are usually initiated by NNMHA and often in conjunction with other providers. They may be given to individuals or organizations and may or may not be based on financial need or merit or both. Generally, sponsorships are specific events that involve a partnering organization and offer promotional opportunities for us. Note: sponsors or sponsorships may be paid directly and may not need to complete a general liability waiver.
Like grants and scholarships, sponsorships are related to specific projects and activities that foster knowledge and understanding of equines.
